Bernard (Beaver) W. Loonsfoot, Sr.
Bernard Loonsfoot Sr., born in Baraga, Michigan, was a proud member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. He was a beloved husband to Maria (née Alvarez) for 40 years. Loving father of Bernard Jr. (Michelle), Tamara, Brandon (Tammi), and Victor (Agnes) Rivera. He was the proud grandfather of Xavier Rivera, Danielle (Chris) Dodaro, Tanaya, Alyssa, Nykia, Lexie, and Aiyana. He is also survived by his brother Eugene “Cowboy”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Pearl, as well as brothers and sisters, Donna, Sonny, Chuck, Jeanette, Joan and Tony.
Bernard was a man of few words whose life was built on dedication, hard work, and deep love for his family. Whether providing for those he cared about or sharing the knowledge he gathered over a lifetime, Bernard spent each day with purpose and heart.
Many may remember him sitting in the garage or driveway patiently showing anyone willing to learn how to work on a car or motorcycle or anything that needed fixing. His hands were skilled, but even more remarkable was his ability to turn everyday moments into lessons, memories, and stories that will be carried on for generations. Bernard loved spending time with his family. State fairs, cookouts, pow wows, and local events weren’t just outings to him—they were moments to be together, laugh, and enjoy life’s simple joys. His presence brought warmth, humor, and connection to every gathering. He also enjoyed taking rides, finding peace and freedom on the open road. Those drives became quiet adventures—reflections of his appreciation for life in all its small, beautiful forms.
He shared a special bond with his loyal Min Pin, Kylee. They were inseparable companions, often found side by side watching TV or simply enjoying each other's company. Their friendship was a true source of comfort and joy.
Bernard leaves behind a legacy of strength, generosity, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but the lessons he taught—both spoken and unspoken—will continue to guide and inspire. May he rest in peace.
