Julia O'Keefe

Date of Death:
Thursday, September 1, 2022

On September 1, 2022, Julia O’Keefe passed away peacefully at Rainbow Hospice Ark in Chicago, Illinois. Julia was 94 years old.

Julia (Lowe) O’Keefe, was born in Carrownamorheeny, Elphin, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. She was the third child of Patrick and Mary Ann (Beirne) Lowe.

Julia emigrated to the United States with her sister Sheila. There they joined relatives and many of their former countrymen, working and also socializing at dances and get-togethers at friends’ homes. Julia met Joseph O’Keefe at one of those dances. They fell in love, married, and had six children. Julia enjoyed spending time with her children, and later with her grandchildren. She was an expert seamstress and created beautiful clothing, scarves/mittens, pillows, draperies, and household items. She also enjoyed needlework - particularly in crewel, cross-stitch, knitting and crocheting - providing beautiful afghans, sweaters, wall art, and doll clothing for her daughters’ dolls. Julia doted on her grandchildren, spending time with them and making them stuffed toys, clothing, scarves/mittens, and their favorite meals.

Julia also enjoyed traveling with her husband Joseph and in-laws the late Noreen and late Martin O’Malley.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick Lowe and Mary Ann Beirne, her husband Joseph, her brother Mark Lowe, sisters Mary Quinn and Sheila Kloepper, and many beloved in-laws, nephews, and friends.

Julia is survived by her children, Patricia (Dennis) O’Neill, Mary, Loretta (Steve) Alepoudeas, Margaret, Theresa (Ken) Voeks, and John (Kathleen Diviak); grandchildren Jeffrey, Eric, Jennifer, Terrence, Sean, Kevin, and Tabitha; stepgranddaughter Katie, in-laws Jennie O’Keefe, Margaret O’Keeffe, William Morrissey, and Sean (Rita) O’Keeffe; and many nieces and nephews.

If roses grow in heaven, Lord please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile. Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away. She was a great loving person. She will be missed. Ken

sorry for your loss

Our hearts are broken. When you share your lifetime with someone that was a beautiful soul (in so many ways) as Mrs. O’Keefe was, it’s impossible to not have a feel of emptiness and sadness at this time. However, it is with all those lifelong treasured memories that started when Mrs. O’Keefe was our next door neighbor on LeClaire and literally why I feel as if I had a stepmom & stepdad (Mr. O’Keefe) not to mention 6 additional step-siblings! Not many really can say they remained friends with their neighbors for 63 years. We’ve shared all those special occasions; happy & sad throughout the years. Mrs O’Keefe knitted beautiful scarves for John and I (pictured) just a few years ago and wrote on a post-it “keep warm!” Well these scarves will warm our hearts forever with all the beautiful memories of you. We are so blessed to have them and will never part with them. I hope I’ll never lose hearing you say “hello Theresa” with your Irish brogue and always will be grateful for the many loaves of Irish Soda bread you shared with us around St. Patrick’s Day-YUM! R.I.P. Mrs O’Keefe and thank you for all the beautiful memories and all you did for me; we will love you always Theresa, John, Matthew, Melissa and Leo
