Sally Mary Greco passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025 at the age of 86, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She is survived by her loving brothers, Charles (Cindy) of Arizona and George (Jackie) of Wisconsin; four nephews—Tom, Chris, Matt, and Mike; one niece, Lori; and her beloved dog, Max. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lucille Greco.
Sally graduated from Mundelein College and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Air Force. Following her service, she worked for many years as a dietitian at Cook County Hospital, where she eventually became the kitchen manager.
A devoted aunt, Sally was always ready to “treat the kids,” and she was cherished by her family and many friends. Affectionately known as the “matriarch of the neighborhood,” she was the kind of person everyone could count on—whether it was for a ride to a doctor’s appointment, treating friends to a birthday dinner, pet sitting, mowing a neighbor’s lawn, or simply being there to lend a hand.
Sally was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church, where she was an active and faithful volunteer. She helped clean and prepare the altar, served as a communion minister, and contributed in countless other ways.
Her greatest passions were dogs and books. While most mailboxes were filled with letters and flyers, Sally’s was filled with dog treats. Neighbors and their dogs would make regular stops at her house, with the dogs eagerly waiting by the mailbox for their treats. She made it a point to know every dog and their owner in the neighborhood.
An avid and voracious reader, Sally always had at least three books going at once—her favorite subject being history. Just as she cared for the dogs of the community, she also nurtured its love of reading. Her front yard featured a free book box, where neighbors could borrow and exchange books at any time.
Sally’s legacy of generosity, service, and warmth lives on in all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Animal Care League, 1013 Garfield St., Oak Park, IL 60304.
